Our Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Resume

(...and we will help you at each stage so don't worry)

Page 1

  1. Personal Details: Add your full name (add nickname e.g. Bob in brackets), job title (optional), contact information, and write a brief 2-3 sentence professional summary (only if appropriate).
  2. Key Skills: Add 6-10 skills relevant to the position/s you are applying for, mixing technical and soft skills. Drag to reorder. The template will read your information and suggest further skills later.
  3. Education & Certifications: Add your highest qualification first, institution, and year completed. Include any licences, tickets, or professional certifications with the year obtained.
  4. Key Achievements (optional): Include a list of recent and/or major projects you have worked on, sales made, or awards — depending on your job roles and/or experience. Keep it to 3 maximum and be brief. Other achievements can be listed under each job.
  5. Attributes: List positive things managers or co-workers have said about you — e.g. are you motivated, reliable, professional, hardworking, a team player, efficient?
  6. Summary of Recent Positions: List your last 2 or 3 roles. If you have not yet worked, leave blank.

💡 Tip: You have limited space on the front page, use it wisely, detail can go on page 2 onwards. This is a summary menu to get their attention.

Page 2 onwards

  1. Professional Experience: List your most recent job first. Include responsibilities and daily tasks so they have a window into your typical day.
  2. Achievements: List your achievements under each role (only if appropriate for you). Numbers can be helpful e.g. improved sales results by 20%, increased production by 25%.
  3. Summary of Previous Positions: After 10-15 years you can summarise roles or list them. Employers are most interested in what you've done over the last 1-5 years.
  4. Interests: Optional. Only add if relevant to the role.
  5. Referees: Add 2-3 professional referees, ideally former managers. Always ask permission first. You can also add "Available On Request" but that may make the reader wonder if there's a problem. Instead you can add "Please contact me before contacting my referees as my current employer is not aware I am seeking alternative opportunities" if that is more appropriate for you.

💡 Tip: Watch your resume update in real-time on the right as you fill in each section!

💡 Tip: Time Gaps — these must be explained, e.g. Raising a Family; International Travel; Managing a renovation.

💡 Tip: If you are mature and have a long work history, you don't have to include all your roles — just cut off at a sensible point.

Add 6–10 skills relevant to the position/s you are applying for. Mix technical and soft skills. Drag to reorder.

List up to 3 of your most significant achievements — projects, sales, or awards. Keep it brief. Other achievements can be listed under each job in Professional Experience.

List positive things managers or co-workers have said about you or you know that you possess — e.g. are you reliable, professional, hardworking, a team player?

List your most recent job first. For each role, include your key responsibilities and achievements. Use present participle (-ing) for your current role — e.g. "Leading and mentoring a team of 12", "Developing strategic marketing plans". Use past tense for previous roles — e.g. "Led and mentored a team of 12". Use numbers where possible, e.g. "Increasing revenue by 20%".
Not sure of exact dates? Check back with HR departments or enter your best estimate — dates may be requested by employers during reference checks and you'll want them to match up.

List your highest qualification first. Include diplomas, certificates, licences, and tickets — e.g. "Bachelor of Business", "White Card", "PMP". Add the institution and year completed.

Certifications & Licences

Use this section to briefly list older roles (typically more than 10 years ago). Just the job title, company, location, and dates — no need for full detail here.

Add interests only if relevant or helpful to the role — for example, if you're applying to be a Train Driver and are a train enthusiast, or want to work as a charity fundraiser and volunteer in your spare time. If in doubt, leave it out.

Add 1–3 professional referees — 2 is fine, ideally former managers. Always ask permission before listing them.
